Procedure for your child's first visit

Around the age of 3 years, the first cleaning examination can be carried out. The dental hygienist can explain to your child the tools she uses such as her mirror and the light to see the teeth well. Depending on the cooperation of the child, a polishing of the teeth, the application of fluoride as well as the examination of the dentist can be done. At the Centre de Haute Technologie Dentaire Lachenaie we have a treasure chest full of surprises for children that makes them want to come back to see us!

Primary dentition

The first tooth appears around the age of 7 to 12 months, these are the central and lateral incisors. Between the age of 16 months and 33 months, the primary dentition is complete. The loss of baby teeth begins around 5 years old with the incisors, followed by the canines and molar between the ages of 9 and 12 years old.

Permanent dentition

The first adult tooth appears around the age of 6-7 years, it is the central and lateral incisors as well as the first molar which will come out behind the primary molars. The premolars will come out between the ages of 10-13 years and 12-14 years for the 2nd molar. As for wisdom teeth, we see more and more people in whom they are non-existent, otherwise their appearance is around the age of 16-18 years.

The eruption sequence is a guideline that can help you track your child's teething. On the other hand it can vary a lot in people who have their eruptions faster or slower than the average. In any case, your hygienist or dentist will be able to check the growth of the teeth at each cleaning examination, in particular using X-rays.

Baby hygiene

From birth, it is recommended to clean the baby's gums and tongue with a soft wet washcloth. As soon as the first tooth begins to erupt, it can be brushed with a small toothbrush with soft bristles and fluoridated toothpaste. The amount of toothpaste should not exceed the size of a grain of rice.

Brushing in children

Toothpaste recommendations to use vary depending on the age of the child. Before the age of 3 years, it should not exceed the size of a grain of rice. Between 3 and 6 years old, the child can use the size of a green pea. It is important to supervise the child when brushing, because even if he wants to be independent and brush his teeth himself, he still lacks the dexterity to brush properly. We recommend letting the child start brushing and then the parent comes to finish it off.

Why fill a primary tooth

The first adult teeth erupt around the age of 6-7 years and the period of eruption continues until adolescence. Some primary teeth will remain in the mouth until the age of 12, sometimes longer. To prevent pain caused by decay or even developing an abscess, we must repair cavities on the primary teeth even if they will fall out later.
